We won a new camera!!  Here is our first photo with it:

Our Drama Performance: Anzac Biscuit Man

In Drama this term we have been learning about how to work together and perform a kiwi classic about the Anzac Biscuit Man. We have been focusing on using expressive clear voices and showing emotion through our actions and on our faces.

Have a look at our performance. We are very famous actors.

Discovery

On Friday we had Discovery. We got to go on the balance boards and sandpit. We went on the obstacle course and we did construction.

My favourite bit was the balance board. Ir was hard because of the tube at the bottom. I think I managed to stay on for 20 seconds but it was tricky.

Oliva's Learning - W.a.l.t create a repeating pattern and know our colours.

This is a photo of Olivia and her collaged Sun. This artwork was created by Olivia as a response to the text ‘How Maui slowed the Sun’. Olivia worked very hard all week and tore, glued, or tore and glued, every square of paper used to make this collage. Even elements such as the eyes that are made of three different shapes and the mouth full of teeth were all her work. The sun’s rays were made by tracing around her hands. Initially we were going to have other room 10 students help with the process but Olivia took such ownership and pride in the project that it was all left up to her so that it would remain all her’s. The Room 10 children were incredibly proud of Olivia’s commitment to the project and perseverance over the course of the week. It seemed a huge task at the start of the week but by Friday, Olivia had truly produced something to be proud of and she was. At gathering yesterday Olivia received a certificate for demonstrating our value of perseverance. She also demonstrated commitment by committing to the task and seeing it through to completion. We now have a beautiful piece of artwork in our classroom and it complements the crayon and dye illustrations that were completed last week.

Cooking with Patti

We made battered broccolini with Pauline's mum. First we had to chop the broccolini up and then we put it in the flour. Next we dipped it into the batter and fried it.

We ate it with a home made tomato sauce. It was good. It was crunchy and really yummy.

I would eat broccolini again.

Fish Art

As part of our St James Day, we created some fish art to represent St James, who was a fisherman who became the fisher of people.

We used wavy lines of blue paints to create the waves. We ripped colour paper into squares and used them to create a collage of a fish. We outlined our fish in glitter to make our fish stand out.

We hope you enjoy our artwork. Come into class to see the real thing.

Maui inpired Art

We have been reading, 'How Maui slowed the sun.' We were inspired to create our own illustrations using crayon and dye to show the sun and Maui holding the magic jaw bone.

Inquiry - Our Body Systems

In Inquiry, we have been learning about the different body systems - nervous system, skeletal system, circulatory system, respiratory system, digestive system and muscular system. We shared some interesting facts during our assembly this week.

Here is a flip book with more of our favourite facts about each system.

Our Assembly

Our Assembly

As part of hosting the assembly this week, we shared some of our learning.

During our study of the trinity we learnt a Snowman poem. The three parts of the snowman’s body represent the three parts of the Holy trinity. The base represents God – our strong rock and foundation. The middle represents Jesus with his arms opened wide. The head of the snowman represents the Holy Spirit which fills our hearts and minds with our strong faith and love.

We have been enjoying a great selection of books about Maui. One of our favourite books is ‘How Maui Slowed the Sun’. As a response to text we have created some dye and crayon illustrations depicting the sun and Maui holding the magic jawbone.

During our inquiry learning about ‘The Body’ we have been learning about the different Body Systems – The skeletal system, circulatory system, muscular system and digestive system.  We have created some A3 sized posters to share our favourite facts. Mrs Edwards particularly enjoyed hearing Sebastien’s fact about the cartilage in our ears and nose.

Charlotte brought one of her favourite CDs to school to share with us. She taught us the moves to her favourite song, ‘God’s love is bigger than a burger’. We have been working hard with Charlotte to learn the movements and this has quickly become a class favourite.

Our Gathering

Matthew 16:13-20

One day Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"

"Some people say that you are John the Baptist; others say that you are Elijah or Jeremiah or one of the other wise prophets from the past."

Then Jesus said, "But who do you say that I am?"

The disciples were silent until Peter said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

Jesus smiled at Peter and said, "My heavenly Father has helped you to understand this. You are Peter (Petros), and on this rock (Petra) I will build my Church. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven; whatever you enforce here on earth will be enforced in heaven, whatever you dismiss her on earth will be dismissed in heaven."

Then Jesus ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ, the Messiah that God had promised.

In the Gospel that we shared we talked about Peter's strong faith. He was like a strong rock - standing strong in his faith and speaking up for Jesus even when what he had to say sounded almost unbelievable. He became a strong rock upon which to build God's holy church.

We showed a picture that we made to illustrate that the Church is not a building - 'We are the Church!'

Great writers!

In Team 10 we have been working hard to achieve our writing goals.  Today two of our children wrote amazing stories that achieved their goals of writing clearly and adding details.  Well done!!

Blog Commenting

Responding to a blog post is called a comment. We talked about what a great blog comment would have. We decided that when we comment we always have to: Say hello, bula, kia ora etc Then we say something about the learning we have seen. Next we can leave a question if we want to find out more. Finally we can say something nice again. Can you follow this way of commenting when you see something on our blog that you want to comment about?

Baptism

We have been learning about the sacrament of Baptism.

This is a 'Y' chart we created as a class.  It shows us what being welcomed by God looks like, sounds like and feels like.

Here are some of Team 10's baptism photos.  We were so cute...

Bones Bones Bones

In Team 10, we have been learning about our skeletons.

This is Mr Skelebones, he shows  the bones in the skeleton we have been learning about.

Murphy has completed the Home Learning challenge!!Here is the detailed poster he created.  It teaches us about some of the bones in the body. He created it using toothpicks.

Here is a catchy song that helps us learn the names of our bones.

Team 10's dance.

Have a look at Room 10's amazing dancers.  We have been learning about cannons and choreography.  Dean McKerras helped us to develop our dance.

Discovery Time in the stunning Junior School!

Have a look at the pictures we took at Discovery Time last week.  We are discovering all sorts of wonderful learning opportunities.  The key competencies we are focussing on are: Relating to others, participating and contributing and thinking.

Discovery time

Discovery Time today was skipping. And we did building, and we measured snakes, bears and a giant beanstalk. It was so much fun. I want to build with Mr Edwards. I get to do that next week. By Fletch

My Body

Here is a power point to encourage us to think about our bodies and how we can be healthy.

Term 3 learning

We are learning about our bodies.  Our focus this week is our internal organs.  Ask your children to name some of our organs.  What have they learnt about the brain?

Have a wonderful holiday with your children.  Enjoy the snow if that is where you are heading.  Enjoy the warmth, snuggled up at home, if that is more your style.
We have been learning all about birds.
Did you know that birds have different beaks because of the type of food they eat?  Their beaks have evolved over a period of time.

Did you know that the wind helps birds to fly?

Did you know that magpies steal other bird's nests so that they don't have to make their own?

We have been sharing the answers to our wondering.

Owl Art

Inspired by our inquiry this term, we have been spending time making our beautiful mixed media "Owl Art" which we have displayed in our cloak bay -  you should come and have a look.  We are very proud!

We drew the owls using simple shapes like circles, ovals and triangles. We then add different types of lines in different shades of brown to represent the owls feathers and dyed our owls a golden brown. Our moody night background was by sponging on black and white paint. To make it look like it was sitting in a tree, we added a branch for the owl to sit on and real and paper leaves behind the owl.

Have a closer look at our owls below. Aren't they cute???

We have been making habitats for our native New Zealand birds.  We had to know if our chosen bird was nocturnal or diurnal.  Then we painted our boxes and chose from a wide range of native plants to create our habitats.

Our newest school student!!  Welcome Penny ;-)

Family/Whanau Mass

This Sunday was our Family/Whanau Mass.  It was a special celebration because it is Pentecost.
It was nice to see our families coming together with our school and church community.

Ducks

Team 10 have been working on a booklet all about ducks. As part of our inquiry we are learning facts about birds. Have a read and please post a comment.

Tree Planting Ceremony

On Wednesday, our buddy class 'Fast and Furious 5's' invited us to be part of a very special tree planting ceremony. They were planting the tree in honour of the Awa tribe that lives in the Amazon. They are losing their home because loggers are cutting down the trees.

We didn't know anything about the Awa tribe before the tree planting ceremony but here are some of the knowledge we (room 10 children and adults) shared with each other after we came back. This knowledge comes from what we heard at the tree planting ceremony, from our parents and teacher, books, t.v and other places too.

  • We planted it for the Awa tribe.
  • They live in the Amazon.
  • Their home is being destroyed by loggers who are cutting down the trees.
  • If the trees are cut down the birds and animals and people won't have homes.
  • The birds and animals will die, which is not fair.
  • We are planting a tree for them so we think of them.
  • We can pray for them when we see the tree.
  • They are being greedy (the loggers) by just cutting the trees down and not planting more.
  • We need trees for oxygen.
  • We planted a kowhai tree.
  • It is a native tree and will attract native birds.
  • Native means it comes "from" that place.
  • You can be born in Japan but if your parents come from New Zealand, you are still a native of New Zealand.
  • We might be in the newspaper.

The Holy Spirit

WALA the Holy Spirit and what it means to us.

This is a prayer we are learning to help us recognise how the Holy Spirit works in us:

Holy Spirit of God be with us as we come to understand how you work in us.
Help us to listen to you when you prompt us to be more caring people.
Use us to be your loving hands in our world.
Amen

Pukaha - Mount Bruce

Off on a bus to Pukaha - Mount Bruce to "find out" what we can about New Zealand's native wildlife.

I went to Mount Bruce.  I saw the white kiwi.  I heard the eels eating the mouse.  By Fletcher

Did you know the female eels swim all the way to Tonga to lay their eggs?

Manukura - "I am a ginga" - the white kiwi is not an albino, it has a recessive gene.  Both parents were brown kiwis.

Discovery Time

Friday is Discovery Time.
Have a look at the pictures below to see all the wonderful discoveries we made by learning through investigation.
We made little booklets - "I am an author".
We constructed all types of buildings and creations.
We made sure our Sacred Space was planted and weeded, ready for our blessing.
We experimented with paint and visual art line and texture.
We practised our motor skills using the PMP equipment.
Wow! We made toast.  It smelt good and tasted even better!  Yum, yum!

Today we had Discovery Time!  Keep your eyes open for more pictures, coming soon...

Mobilo is fun.  Look at my amazing aeroplane.
