Tree Planting Ceremony

On Wednesday, our buddy class 'Fast and Furious 5's' invited us to be part of a very special tree planting ceremony. They were planting the tree in honour of the Awa tribe that lives in the Amazon. They are losing their home because loggers are cutting down the trees.

We didn't know anything about the Awa tribe before the tree planting ceremony but here are some of the knowledge we (room 10 children and adults) shared with each other after we came back. This knowledge comes from what we heard at the tree planting ceremony, from our parents and teacher, books, t.v and other places too.

  • We planted it for the Awa tribe.
  • They live in the Amazon.
  • Their home is being destroyed by loggers who are cutting down the trees.
  • If the trees are cut down the birds and animals and people won't have homes.
  • The birds and animals will die, which is not fair.
  • We are planting a tree for them so we think of them.
  • We can pray for them when we see the tree.
  • They are being greedy (the loggers) by just cutting the trees down and not planting more.
  • We need trees for oxygen.
  • We planted a kowhai tree.
  • It is a native tree and will attract native birds.
  • Native means it comes "from" that place.
  • You can be born in Japan but if your parents come from New Zealand, you are still a native of New Zealand.
  • We might be in the newspaper.

The Holy Spirit

WALA the Holy Spirit and what it means to us.

This is a prayer we are learning to help us recognise how the Holy Spirit works in us:

Holy Spirit of God be with us as we come to understand how you work in us.
Help us to listen to you when you prompt us to be more caring people.
Use us to be your loving hands in our world.
Amen

Pukaha - Mount Bruce

Off on a bus to Pukaha - Mount Bruce to "find out" what we can about New Zealand's native wildlife.

I went to Mount Bruce.  I saw the white kiwi.  I heard the eels eating the mouse.  By Fletcher

Did you know the female eels swim all the way to Tonga to lay their eggs?

Manukura - "I am a ginga" - the white kiwi is not an albino, it has a recessive gene.  Both parents were brown kiwis.

Discovery Time

Friday is Discovery Time.
Have a look at the pictures below to see all the wonderful discoveries we made by learning through investigation.
We made little booklets - "I am an author".
We constructed all types of buildings and creations.
We made sure our Sacred Space was planted and weeded, ready for our blessing.
We experimented with paint and visual art line and texture.
We practised our motor skills using the PMP equipment.
Wow! We made toast.  It smelt good and tasted even better!  Yum, yum!

Today we had Discovery Time!  Keep your eyes open for more pictures, coming soon...

Mobilo is fun.  Look at my amazing aeroplane.

Algebra - Let's make patterns.

We have been learning about patterns.  Have a look at some of the patterns we made. Can you see the repeating patten?
